How to Pick A Domain Name

This article is not just about how to pick a domain name, but how to pick a good domain name. Yes, it would be cool to have a snappy, multi-million dollar, successful website address and company named after your cat Fluffy. However, several factors must be taken into account before picking a domain name or website URL.

First, does your domain name pass the telephone test? This means, if you were to simply say the name of your site over the phone, would the person on the other end know how to spell your website without you having to spell it for them? Therefore, the name of a site could be BasketSEO.com and not BazzketSEO.com, DaBasketSEO.com, BasketSEOz.com, BaascetSE0.com, etc.

Second, if the .com for your desired name is not available for your commercial company, don’t settle for the .net, .org., .me, .us, .biz, etc. If you spend all your time marketing for your .net, a significant portion of your traffic that is trying to get to your page will type in .com on accident. So, while you are marketing and advertising for your .net site, you are also marketing to whoever owns the .com version of your domain name as well and losing traffic in the process!

Finally, branding is great, but don’t underestimate the value of using actual keyword phrases that people search for into the domain name of your company. For example, if someone is searching for SEO and types SEO into Google and our site, www.BasketSEO.com comes up in the search listings, then the “SEO” part of our domain will come up in bold. Seeing what you type into Google’s search box come up in bold in the domain name of a listing draws people to want to click on it. Have your SEO specialist come up with a list of keyword phrases people search for in your industry to give you ideas on a great, practical domain name.

When you are ready to buy your domain name and do a search, be ready to buy it on the spot. Simply waiting a couple hours could result in someone else buying that domain name before you and trying to sell it back to you for a premium or worse, using it to make a competing company.

5 Steps to a Local Search Engine Optimization Strategy

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in your city can be a daunting, overwhelming task.  How can you compete with million and millions of other websites on the internet that do exactly the same thing you do?  If you are a local business, I have good news for you.  This includes professionals (accountants, doctors, lawyers, dentists, and agents), services (mechanics, bakeries, schools, designers, and contractors), retail locations (clothing stores, electronics, malls, and bookstores), restaurants, clubs and any other business that needs local clients and customers.  You don’t need to compete with the countless websites on the internet, you only need to compete with the other local businesses in your industry.  How do you do this successfully?

1.      Get your website indexed.

Is your site listed on Google?  Type your website into the Google Search Box and see if your website comes up in the search listings.  If not, this would be a good first step.  To do this, all you need to do is submit your website to Google to be indexed.  Another way to get your site listed is to have links to your websites on other websites so that when Google bots search through those sites, they will find and index your site as well.

2.       Target keyword phrases that your local clientele would type into Google to find you.

Let’s say you are a local bakery in Cerritos (a city within the Los Angeles metro area).  When you type in the word “bakery” into Google, you end up with 140,000,000 websites!  If you type in, “bakery in Cerritos,” you only end up with 725,000 websites.  It’s still daunting, but much less so than 140 million.  This would be the beginning of a targeted SEO Los Angeles internet marketing strategy.

3.      Use social media in your internet marketing campaign.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube have become internet marketing powerhouses that even major corporations can’t ignore.  Utilize these amazing sites to advertise your business not only to your friends, but the friends of your friends and everyone else in your city.  Combining social media and other internet marketing with SEO to create a complete and synergistic internet marketing strategy is called basket SEO.

4.      Have other websites link back to your website.

Part of how relevant your website is for a keyword phrase is what your website says about itself.  This can include the title, description and content of your website.  The other part is what other websites say about you.  For example, it would be helpful to have websites geared toward your city or in a related industry saying that your website is about being a bakery in Cerritos.  This part may require the help of a professional SEO in Los Angeles to carry this out effectively, properly and safely.  Google has a strict policy on how this can be done and they don’t like people trying to cheat the system.

5.      Have patience.

Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither is your business.  With 725,000 other websites competing for that 1st page of Google, it will take time to get there.  With the right strategy, guidance and work, you will get there faster.  Dreams come true.

Avoid Duplicate Content in your Blog

When there are multiple versions of the same content on the net, search engines like Google may only index the version they think to be the original.  This means, you cannot just copy an article and paste it into your blog or some other version of this like poor article spinning, auto RSS Feed re-posting, or some automated scraping program that auto-populates your blog for you from another source.

Other times this can happen is if you syndicate your article and the content is duplicated wherever it is posted. If you do this, it might help if the syndicated article has a backlink to the original post on your site.

This can also occur internally if you have different URLs within your site displaying  the same content. If you have multiple versions of similar content, you could consolidate them into one page, use a 301 redirect to the original page or block search engines from indexing duplicate copies. If it appears that you are duplicating content on your site to deceive search engines, your site could be penalized.

If you are re-publishing content from another site, you may want to include a conical tag referencing the original version within the link code. i.e. <link   rel=“canonical” href="http://www.owerly.com/originalarticle.html"/>

To check if your content or content that was written for your site is duplicate content, you can paste and run it through Copyscape.com
