8 Uncommon Backlink Strategies for SEO

8 Uncommon Backlink Strategies for SEO

Getting white-hat backlinks gets more and more confusing with each Google update. What still works? Or more importantly, what will get you penalized? Here are some manual, potentially valuable backlinks that agencies are still using

1. Infographics

Infographics are a great way to capture the reader’s attention and offer value in exchange for backlinks. Specifically, if you find an article in a niche related to yours, you can offer the webmaster a custom, high-value infographic for the article and they will hopefully give you a backlink in exchange if they use it.

3 Types of infographics include:

  • Facts and data
  • General concepts and ideas
  • Step-by-Step explanations

2 sites to help you create your own infographics includes:

  • piktochart.com
  • canva.com

Or, you can hire a freelancer to create the infographic for you at places like Fiverr.com

2. The Flattery List

Another great way to get backlinks includes a Flattery List. This is a list of recommended coaches, sites, resources, etc. It can be a top 10 list within a niche or category for example.

You can then contact the people on the list that they are on it and encourage them to share it with their audience, potentially with a backlink to it.

Contact/e-mail the people on your list to attempt to get a backlink. Personalize a friendly message to them about your top list and that they are on it. Suggest to them that they can share it or link to it.

3. Influencer Quote

Similar to the last method, you can ask influencers to give you a quote and use that quote in the article and ask them to link to it.

Followerwonk can help you find influencers at moz.com/followerwonk

4. Media Mentions

You can submit leads for stories at HARO (Help a Reporter Out) or SourceBottle that involve your company in some way with a potential backlink.

You can pitch quotes here for their stories by looking at quote requests for topics you have an expertise in and possibly get a backlink that way.

5. Broken Backlink Building

Broken Backlink Building brings you links by replacing broken backlinks on sites with links to your site instead.

Look through resource pages within your niche for broken links. (Google “Niche” + “Resources”  inurl, You can also include gov or edu)

Then, you can use the “Check My Links” Google Chrome extension to look for broken links on the resources page (by Paul Livingstone). The extension will highlight broken links in red. Find a replacement page on your website to replace the broken links with.

Finally, contact the webmaster and let them know the link is broken and your link they can replace it with.

6. Skyscraper

Look for articles that are outdated and contact their backlinks to update their site with your updated, better article instead.

For example, check for articles that mention sites that have changed their name then you know the article is outdated. Create the replacement article and contact backlinks to that article.

Start contacting higher domain authority backlinks that are “do follow”.  A backlink checker tool can help you with that.

7. Guest Posting

In Guest Posting, you write a blog article for them and if they post it on their website they can give you a backlink as well.

Alltop.com is a great place to find sites within a category.

Search for "guest post" in the website search box.

Do a Google search for keyword + "my guest posts" to see where others are posting.

8. Monitor Your Mentions

Setup Google alerts to e-mail you whenever a site mentions your url. Then, you can ask that webmaster to turn that mention into a link.
